Tsai Adm. Grateful for US Approval of Jet Fighter Sale|80億美元F-16戰機售台 川普證實已批准

On Aug. 18, US President Donald Trump said he'd approved a US$8 billion sale of F-16V fighter jets to Taiwan. He also said this would bring the US a lot of money and jobs. In response, Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense expressed its gratitude to Trump and said it hopes the US Congress can approve the sale as soon as possible. On Aug. 19, President Tsai Ing-wen received foreign guests and used the opportunity to again express her opinion on the anti-extradition protests in Hong Kong. She called on Beijing to refrain from making a wrong judgment and creating historical regrets. Tsai also said Taiwan will care about Hong Kong but not intervene.

On the 18th, US President Donald Trump announced a US$8 billion sale of F-16V fighter jets to Taiwan. Trump declared the sale would create a lot of money and jobs and said he believes Taiwan will use the jets responsibly. A joint statement issued by the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations and House Committee on Foreign Affairs expressed optimism and support for the sale. Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense, meanwhile, expressed gratitude.

We hope this arms deal can be approved by the US Congress as soon as possible so that Taiwan can upgrade its self-defense capabilities and maintain peace in the Taiwan Strait as well as security and stability in the Asia Pacific region.

Details will not emerge until the sale has been approved by Congress, but the sale of 66 jets would be the largest arms package transaction between the United States and Taiwan in recent years. One analyst says Taitung Air Force Base would probably be the best place for deployment due to its strategic location. While receiving former Australian Defence Minister Christopher Pyne on the 19th, President Tsai Ing-wen said she is maintaining regional stability and peace. She also used the opportunity to talk about the anti-extradition protests in Hong Kong and call on China to refrain from making a "wrong judgment."

I also have to call on the governments of Beijing and Hong Kong to use wisdom and sincerity to resolve the conflict. They have a responsibility to not make things worse and need to stop blaming the involvement of nonexistent external forces. They also need to stop rejecting dialogue with the people. They need to refrain from making wrong judgments and creating historical regrets.

Tsai said Taiwan is a part of the democratic camp and therefore supports Hong Kong's pursuit of democracy and freedom. At the same time, however, she is worried about the situation in Hong Kong worsening and therefore will not intervene. Tsai's comments were perhaps aimed at refuting commentary published in the People's Daily that Taiwan is an active player behind the scenes in Hong Kong.
