Researchers Develop New Aquaponic Technology|新養殖技術 節水節約成本養高價藻類

The Council of Agriculture's Eastern Marine Biology Research Center has conducted a successful aquaponics experiment. In an outdoor space less than 10 pings in size, a new technology was developed using deep-sea water to breed sea fish and algae with high economic value. This setup can produce annual economic value of NT$350,000. In the future, the technology will be turned over to private farms for expansion and economic value will go up even more.

Deep sea water costs NT$18 per ton, making it an expensive investment for aquafarmers. However, it can be recycled to breed different marine species. Using aquaponics, researchers at the Eastern Marine Biology Research Center began experimenting with a row of four connected ponds two years ago. Each 6-square-meter pond was filled with 4 tons of low-temperature, deep-sea water. The first pond was used to farm flatfish. The water was then transferred to the other three ponds, which were used to farm caulerpa, striped beakfish and red grape kelp. The setup reduces water usage while producing annual economic value of NT$350,000 in an area less than 10 pings in size.

The setup can produce 30 to 50 kilograms of flatfish a year in addition to 30 kilograms of striped beakfish.

Researcher Huang You-hsu says the yield of the two algae ponds also increased 30 kilograms each, and the biggest obstacle remains nutrient and temperature control. The key is finding species that flourish in the setup.

The setup conserves water and lowers cost. We can also reduce pollution in the drained wastewater.

Further research will focus on minimizing light impact and spirulina growth as well as designing protective nets against birds. Once the technology is developed, it will be transferred to the private sector.

農委會東部海洋生物研究中心試驗成功一種利用魚菜共生概念,在戶外不到十坪的面積,以深層海水養殖高經濟價值海水魚和海藻的新技術,年產值可達35萬元,未來技轉給民間擴大養殖,產值會更高。

利用深層海洋養殖,一噸水要18元,對養殖業來說是高投資成本,但多次利用、養殖不同海中生物就划得來。東部海洋生物研究中心就利用淡水魚菜共生概念,研發''多溫層海水養殖系統'',在戶外建造4個串連一排的水池,每池6平方公尺,可裝4噸低溫的深層海水,第一池養殖俗稱扁鱈魚的比目魚,用過的水再流到其他三個水池,分別養殖綠葡萄藻、條紋石鯛魚以及紅葡萄藻,經過2年的實驗,這個系統不但可節省深層海水的用水量,而且不到十坪的養殖面積就可創造1年35萬元的收益。

黃侑勖說,兩個養海藻池也有各增加30公斤的收獲量,但最大的困難是要克服海水中的營養鹽和溫度,不過找到適合的養殖物種,不但能養得好,又可以達到節省肥料養高價藻類的效果。
