In the past, if you told a friend that you wanted to make a living by writing or drawing comic books, they would have reminded you that publishing houses are very choosy about whose works they decide to publish; they are only willing to accept books that they think will be best-sellers, and they are not interested in helping someone to get published just because they are interested in becoming an author. In reality, however, no-one can ever be sure that a given book will sell well. Even famous authors sometimes write books that flop, and ordinary people can produce first-class books that large numbers of people are willing to buy.

Using a website or blog, anyone can produce their own work easily, to satisfy their desire to become a writer. Noted venture capitalist and blogger Jamie C. Lin gives as an example the 26-year-old first-time author Amanda Hocking, who sold her own work for reading on Kindle without having to pay anything to a publishing company. She succeeded in selling over 100,000 copies a month, and made US$1 million in one year. Regarding the new business opportunities that are emerging in the field of “publishing for all,” Makoto Murata, Director of the Japan Electronic Publishing Association (JEPA), who has been visiting Taiwan at the invitation of the Chinese-language ePUB project team of the E-Reading Industry Promotion Alliance’s standards special interest group, points out that, today, many people already disseminate their own writings and comics on their own website or blog, but that, while this can attract more visitors to the site or blog, it is difficult to gain direct monetary benefit from it.

。針對這種新的素人出版商機,應台灣電子閱讀產業推動聯盟標準SIG ePUB中文工作小組之邀,來台的日本電子出版協會技術主任村田真表示,現在有許多人將自己創作的文字、漫畫張貼到網站或部落格上,固然可以增加人氣和流量,但難以直接創造獲利。

Murata says that the steadily evolving ePUB e-book format makes it possible for e-books to be viewed on any e-reading device, allowing authors to focus on the actual writing rather than worrying about which devices will be supported. Once you have created the work online and converted it to ePUB format, you can publish or disseminate it directly for reading on a wide range of different devices.
