Fu-yen Chen, General Manager of Huashan Creative Park, indicated that the thought process and the positioning of the culture and creative industry determine its class and value. The same statement applies to “Huashan1914”, a new window to Taiwan’s culture and creative industry restored from a historical building (ex-wine factory). Chen stressed that, as the “future showcase” of the culture and creative industry, Huashan must demonstrate its power of culture with the support of certain “cultural foundations”, what we refer to as “soft power.”
“Though many people come to Huashan on weekends to shoot wedding photos, we do not want it to become a destination for wedding photography. Huashan is also often used for special events of the aboriginals and Hakka people, but neither do we want the place to be reserved only for aboriginal or Hakka people.” Chen is worried that the Huashan Creative Park, which has been running for three years now, will be labeled. “Huashan provides a stage for performers, allowing everyone to be an artist,” said Chen.
Chen mentioned that when he was little, performers would put up a stage in front of a temple in the country side. Villagers would bring their stools and come to watch the performance with their families. As more and more people gathered, some would even step forward to challenge and compete with the performers. Huashan, at its early stage, had wished to create a similar ambiance so as to attract crowds. Chen also emphasized his plan to raise Huashan’s capability to host large scale international performances. “If we see Taiwan, Taipei, and Huashan as a Marketplace, we can beat any competitors in the world.” said Chen.
