Over the last couple of years, a number of new organizations and events have been set up in Taiwan that are intended to help entrepreneurs start new businesses; these organizations and events include appWorks, CyberAgent, TMI, Startup Labs, and the NTU Start-up Alliance. Taiwan is also seeing the emergence of a growing number of online innovation teams. There is widespread anticipation that these new developments may help to bring about a qualitative transformation, stimulating the creation of more new software and Internet-related firms.

The first Startup Labs to be held in Taiwan received sponsorship from leading software companies Microsoft and Google. Volker Heistermann, CEO of Yushan Ventures, is confident that, given Taiwan’s outstanding technology capabilities, Taiwan has the potential to establish itself as “Asia’s Silicon Valley.” He says that their motivation for bringing Startup Weekend and Startup Labs to Taiwan is to help create a good environment for people who want to start their own business.

For the first Startup Labs, five teams – Lucent Sky, InsureMe, Flirq, FoodJing and Gumhoo – were chosen to undergo the 22-day Startup Labs cultivation process. A presentation was recently held to showcase the results achieved; besides benefiting from the NT$1 million award provided to each successful team, these entrepreneurs have also attracted interest from other venture capital firms.

Then there is the NTU Start-up Alliance, which – with participants that include National Taiwan University alumni who have become successful, famous entrepreneurs, such as Quanta Chairman Barry Lam, MediaTek Chairman Tsai Ming-kai, Wowprime Chairman Steve Tai, and Global Mobile Chairperson Rosemary Ho – is seen as a major integrating force for local capital and talent, and which is seeking to make a contribution towards enhancing the business start-up environment in Taiwan.
